Monastrell is a grape that has been grown around the western Mediterranean for centuries. It can tend to be made in a very tannic style which is why it does so well when blended with a grape like Shiraz, which adds more fruit flavours and some spicy characteristics. The vines take several years before they begin to produce fruit, but the grapes afterwards are well worth the wait!
